Urzua says economists have typically focused on cognitive skills (such as intelligence, literacy, mathematical abilities) in analyzing employment trends. Recently, however, economists have started to look at non-cognitive "soft" skills (like self esteem, motivation, sympathy). Video Transcript: Hello everyone, My name is Ron Desi and today I'm going to tell you about 6 easy ways to improve cognitive ability. You've probably experienced memory lapses from time to time or you simply cannot concentrate on your project or homework. This scenario happens to all of us, but to prevent more serious scenarios and to protect our cognitive functions we just have to remember a few tips and tricks. Let's see what you can do to improve your cognitive ability: 1. Exercise - physical activity boosts blood flow to the hippocampus which is responsible for memory 2. Take up a new hobby - choose a hobby that requires learning. Learning activity develops new connections between neurons which slows down cell loss due to disease or aging 3. Manage stress - people with high stress levels experience more cognitive problems than people who are stress-free 4. Socialize - friendships and positive relationships help protect against memory loss 5. Meditation - improves memory, decision-making, and attention span 6. Eat foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which are known for improving brain functions. Hope this video inspired you to implement simple tips and tricks for sharper memory and focus. It is defined as "the ability of an individual to perform the various mental activities most closely associated with learning and problem solving. Examples include verbal, spatial, psychomotor, and processing-speed ability." Cognition mainly refers to things like memory, the ability to learn new information, speech, understanding of written material. The brain is usually capable of learning new skills in the aforementioned areas, typically in early childhood, and of developing personal thoughts and beliefs about the world. Old age and disease may affect cognitive function, causing memory loss and trouble thinking of the right words while speaking or writing ("drawing a blank"). Multiple sclerosis (MS), for example, can eventually cause memory loss, an inability to grasp new concepts or information, and depleted verbal fluency. Not all with the condition will experience this side effect, and most will retain their general intellect and the ability. Humans generally have a capacity for cognitive function once born, so almost every person is capable of learning or remembering. However, this is tested using tests like the IQ test, although these have issues with accuracy and completeness. In these tests, the patient will be asked a series of questions or to perform tasks, with each measuring a cognitive skill, such as level of consciousness, memory, awareness, problem-solving, motor skills, analytical abilities, or other similar concepts. Early childhood is when most people are best able to absorb and use new information. In this period, children learn new words, concepts, and various methods to express themselves.

University of Maryland economist Sergio Urzua says non-cognitive skills are as important as cognitive skills in employment trends, government policy, and human behavior. Urzua says economists have typically focused on cognitive skills (such as intelligence, literacy, mathematical abilities) in analyzing employment trends. Recently, however, economists have started to look at non-cognitive "soft" skills (like self esteem, motivation, sympathy). Economists have developed a lot of evidence showing the impact of cognitive skills on labor market outcomes, wages, occupation, and employment, but they didn't really know the importance of these socio-emotional skills. New evidence shows that these soft skills are both as important as cognitive skills in determining labor market outcomes, and are affecting human behavior in general. Urzua says policymakers are starting to consider them in designing and implementing public policy -- particularly in developing countries.
